Judy was recognized for her achievement during the Kirksville School Board’s meeting on the evening of Tuesday, February 12, 2008. “’National Board Certification’ is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward great teachers—and make them better,” according to the NBPTS web site. Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. The Kirksville R-III School District provides additional compensation of $3000.00 per year for 10 years to teachers who achieve National Board certification. The Kirksville R-III School District is one of an increasing number of Missouri schools that stipend teachers who achieve National Board Certification. “Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous criteria through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review,” according to NBPTS President and CEO Joseph A. Aguerrebere, who is quoted on the organization’s web site. “Research demonstrates that National Board Certified Teachers consistently outperform their peers in knowledge of subject matter and ability to create challenging and engaging lessons.” All 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 700 local school districts recognize National Board Certification as a mark of distinction and excellence.
