KIRKSVILLE R

On April 26, ten students from Kirksville R-III School District participated in the State Missouri Council of Teacher of Mathematics (MCTM) Competition. These students had ranked in the top three of their Regional Meets. Fourth through Sixth grade students attended Regional Competition in Macon on March 29 while Seventh and Eighth grade students attended Regional Competition at Hannibal. None of our state competitors made the top ten rankings at state competition; however, some students commented, “There is always next year!” The Middle School students will have their final meeting on Tuesday, April 29 to strategize and determine questions that need to be considered for next year’s competitions.

KIRKSVILLE R-III WRAPS UP MATH CLUB FOR 2007-2008 Math Club winds down with an International and a State Competition. On April 14, sixteen KMS students entered three teams in an on-line International competition. The students joined Dr. Knight and Mrs. Schulte for the end of day activity in the Middle School computer lab. After some grueling work and little practice, results were posted on April 22 with a note that less than 50% is not an uncommon score on this type of test. Teams B and C received honorable mention with 9/15 and 6/15 respectively. Team B was further encouraged to find they tied for 15^th out of 658 schools with greater than four hundred students. Altogether, there were 1,737 Middle Schools and High Schools registered for the test. These schools included Middle Schools from China, Germany, India, Philippines, Romania, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States. Purple Comet Math Contest was offered through the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Photos of teams hard at work during the 60 minute test are below.
