What is PBS?

PBS is a research based proactive systems approach to school-wide discipline. This approach focuses on instruction and prevention of problem behaviors and is designed to meet the needs of all students.  PBS is a way for staff and students to work together to build a safe school environment while having fun.  It is our hope to build a foundation of consistency and positive interactions within our program to increase student achievement now and as they transition into kindergarten.  Kirksville R-III has a district wide (ec-12) PBS program.

How Students Learn About the Expectations

Throughout the day, across different environments and during varying activities the students are taught about the expectations. The expectations are posted throughout the building in differing formats.  Teachers use varying opportunities such as snack time, circle time, playground time, ect.,  to review the expectations with the students.  Specific social story activities are presented in each classroom.  Together, the teachers and students discuss and recognize appropriate, as well as inappropriate behaviors. Sometimes students are rewarded with tangible items such as a sticker or a ‘I made a good choice’ bracelet, while at other times they are recognized with nontangible items such as a pat on the back or verbal praise.
