Positive Behavior Supports

at Ray Miller Elementary

Our school uses a system in which the emphasis is on school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for establishing, teaching, and supporting a system of expectations for appropriate student behavior.  The Positive Behavior Support system establishes a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school.

We are focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that will help all students learn and demonstrate socially appropriate behavior.  The graphic below illustrates how these varying levels of support are implemented in our school.

FAQs

Where and when is the program implemented?

The program was implemented building-wide, in all classroom and all non-classroom settings in the fall of 2007.

Who is responsible for implementing and evaluating the program?

All building staff, including teachers, secretaries, lunchroom staff, custodians, etc. are participants in this program.

What am I expected to do and when should I do it?

All staff:

o       Familiarize yourself with the matrix of expectations.

o       Use the vocabulary of the program.

o       Model appropriate behavior for students and expect it from them at all times.

o       Reward appropriate behavior verbally and using the Tiger Ticket system.

o       Use precorrects whenever possible, and handle minor inappropriate behavior as a reteaching opportunity.

Classroom Teachers:

In addition to the expectations for all staff, classroom teachers are expected to:

o       Teach and reinforce weekly social skill lessons in the classroom.

o       Display the matrix of expectations in the classroom.

o       Follow the procedures for the Focus Room, Office Referral, and other secondary and tertiary preventions.

o       Provide the PBS team with input about the program.

o       Review SWIS data that is presented at monthly faculty meetings and make procedural changes as recommended.
